"The sound changed substanstially with added weight and texture, black back ground and more solid imaging. The upgrade is surely worth the price ... The improvement again was obvious, but less so that the acrylic with shot. Both shared solid imaging and wonderful texture. The primary difference appeared to be added dynamics and liveliness with the wood..." Click her for the full thread:

Just got back from VSAC, where the last thing we did was listen to a demo Chris did, a comparison of three platters and a clamp. Starting with the plain acrylic platter on a Model 265 base, he went to the lead shot loaded acrylic and finally the lead shot loaded wood used on the full 265.

Each step up was clearly, easily audible. I'm talking you knew in seconds- further listening definitely helped round out impressions, but that each platter was superior to the one before was immediately apparent.

Chris used a 45 rpm LP of Ellington, a track that started out simply with female vocal and sparse accompaniment, then built up with solo's on sax, muted trumpet and so on. Each time you knew it was better just listening to the vocal, as each platter fleshed out greater detail and presented a more palpably solid singer's presence in the room. Then as each instrument joined in your appreciation for the improvements only grew, as the cymbals took on greater sheen and shimmer, the trumpet greater solidity and so on. You know sax is hard to do, but by the time we got to the wood platter the balance between reedy detail and the resonant body of the horn was really clickin' in.

The kicker was at the end, when he swapped out record clamps. Chris had a brand new clamp where the delrin portion is replaced with West-resin treated cocobolo. Another huge difference, about as much (Chris says "nearly") as between say the lead-loaded acrylic and wood platters. The platter comparisons were impressive enough but everyone was blown away with the clamp demo.

"...Chris demonstrated the sonic differences between the two platters with some vinyl I brought to the show. Three notes into side one of Count Basie Chairman of the Board (Classic Records), you could tell a distinct difference. It's not a small one either..." Click her for the full report:

  • Acrylic to Wood Base Upgrade: By TWL, Audiogon Forum (1-May-2002)
"...When I changed my plinth from acrylic to Cocobolo lead-shot weighted base, it was like I had gotten a totally new turntable. This was not a subtle change. It was very large, and probably the largest single change that has happened in my system..." Click here for the full thread

  • Wood Base Upgrade: By Mister Pig, Vinyl Asylum (27-Apr-2002)
"...The improvements were across the board. There were times that the improvement was so great that my mind actually tried to reject what my ears was hearing. I kept thinking that there was no way that there could be that much of an improvement by just going to a lead shot base. Well after an hour of disbelieving, I finally came to terms that I now had a world class table in my room..." Click here for the full thread
